Puppy Mills and Brokers - An Appeal

Please do not buy puppies from pet stores or from puppy brokers.

Pet stores buy their stock from people who raise dogs on a large scale, in very unsanitary conditions, with no medical attention, and no regard for the breed at all. A reputable breeder would never sell to a pet store or broker since breeders are concerned for the welfare of their puppies.

Brokers buy puppies and re-sell them to the unsuspecting public. They are not involved with the raising and nurturing of puppies, which to them  are purely a commodity to be bought and sold. To enhance the pups appeal  they may get them from overseas puppy mills, and so they are able to declare the pups to be imported. Brokers along with backyard breeders advertise in  newspapers because they are not affiliated with any clubs or associations  connected with dogs, and are not established in the legitimate business of  raising dogs. A newspaper is not a good source for finding the puppy of your dreams. Breed web pages have Breeder Directories for established and reputable breeders.  Use them along with your common sense.

The only way to shut down puppy mills is to take away the demand. For example, at a pet store that had one of our breed for sale, we were told they wouldn’t order any more since the dogs did not sell very well.

Any pup may get sick in the course of a life time but the chances greatly increase by buying a pup from a questionable source. Not having a breeder around to help you through those difficult times that may crop up is also a draw back. Please do not purchase puppies from pet stores and brokers.
